XMAS Marks the Sport - It's James' Annual Christmas Run for Choose Love!

Avid readers of our blog might remember when two years back, we shared that our Head of Technical Operations, James Turnbull, ran 10km to spell 'XMAS' on a map for the MS Society. Well, he's back at it again! This year, James is taking on the challenge with an even bigger running crew to raise money for Choose Love on 14th December.

The Story Behind the XMAS Run

The XMAS run started in 2020 when James saw a Strava heatmap post by someone who had run every street in Sydney during lockdown. “It sparked the idea to use the map tracking feature to spell out a word,” he explains. “Since it was Christmas, ‘XMAS’ felt like the perfect choice.”

After meticulously planning the route, he ran it solo in the first year, retracing his steps to create the letters. “It felt a bit strange doubling back and running in unusual directions, especially for the X, but people loved the concept.’

How Has the XMAS Run Evolved?

“This year marks our fourth edition of the run. The essence remains the same: have fun, spell out ‘XMAS,’ and raise money for charity. We’re hoping for an even bigger group this year, and I’ve heard rumours there will be a number of festive outfits to accompany me dressed in a Santa suit…’

‘We also have some cheerleaders along the route this time, so I hope the sun comes out for us!’

James’ XMAS run has supported several different causes over the years, from Crohn’s & Colitis UK to the MS Society. “This year, we chose Choose Love because of the critical work they do to support refugees and displaced people. Everyone deserves to be safe, fed and warm.”

Why Running Matters

For James, running is more than just exercise. “I’ve always loved running—it’s great for staying on top of both your physical and mental health. During lockdown, it became a way to break free from the monotony of being stuck indoors. The XMAS run combines that passion with giving back.”

Join The Fun or Support The Cause

The run will follow the tried-and-true route through south London, ending with a photo finish at Tower Bridge, plus a post-run coffee stop to bring all the runners and supporters together. “It’s about more than just the run—we want it to be a social, festive experience for everyone, whether you’re running or cheering us on.”
